Inquiry Block

Here is what I am discovering during the Inquiries my class is doing this year.

China

What Chinese people eat?
Grains are the main foods in China. In the South of China, people eat rice daily. They also eat Grasshoppers, Caterpillars, birds, Dogs and chicken feet (yuk)!

Traditional Chinese Opera?
In Beijing opera, traditional Chinese use string and percussion instruments.

Chinese Festivals?
The Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie is a traditional Chinese festival, which is on the 15th of the first month of the Chinese New Year. The festival marks the end of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year. This is a festival for people having fun. On the night of the festival, people go on streets with lanterns under the full moon, watching lions or a dragon dancing, playing Chinese riddles and games, and lighting up firecrackers.

Chinese Zodiac?
The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish. All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last. All the year 3 students that are born in the year 2000 are the year of the dragon.

Rainforests

Rainforest Habitat facts:

Temperatures/Weater
  • The temperature is always warm and humid and has alot of rain amounting to about 250cm per year.
  • The temperature averages over 80 degrees fahrenheit.
  • There are two types of rainforests tropical and temperature and most are near the hot equator.
  • It is more likely to rain above a rainforest because the air is always cooler.
  • Rainforests are never found in climates which have temperatures 32 degrees fahrenheit and below because the plant life will not be able to live because they aren't adapted to frost.

Living Creatures

  • Rainforests are rich in animal life and provide a habitat for between 50 and 90 per cent of plants and animal species.
  • There are insects (like butterflies and beetles), arachnids (like spiders and ticks), worms, reptiles (likes snakes and lizards), amphibians (like frogs and toads), birds (like parrots and toucans) and mammals (like sloths and jaguars).
  • All the animals live in different areas of the rainforest from the forest floor, to the understory or the canopy.
  • There are more plant-eaters than meat-eaters in Rainforests.
  • There are more small animals than large animals in a Rainforest.

Rainforest Plant Life

  • Many of the plants in the rainforest have been around for millions of years.
  • A common and widespread Amazon canopy tree can grow up to 150 feet tall.
  • A Liana vine is so strong that it can hold the weight of an adult. Tarzan swings from these vines in the movies.
  • Rainforest plants always huddle together to stay warm and humid. This is important for the survival of the plants and animals living in it.
  • Everyday rainforests are able to provide basic food, shelter and water to animals. It also provides food, clothing, furniture, shelter, fuel, spices, raw materials and medicine for humans.

Where are Rainforests?

  • Tropical rainforests are found in 85 countries around the world.
  • Half of the world's rainforests lie within the borders of Brazil, Indonesia, and Zaire.
  • The dense and damp tropical rainforest occur in Latin and South America, Africa, and in Southeast Asia.
  • Temperature rainforests are located along the Pacific coast of Canada and the United States. They are also found in New Zealand, Tasmania, Chile, Ireland, as well as Scotland and Norway.
  • Australia and has both tropical and temperature rainforests.
